Preface- The United Collieries Limited
The Directors have compiled a Roll of all Employees in the Company who served in the Navy or Army during the European War 1914 -1919. When the War broke out it was decided that every encouragement should be given to the employees to enlist, house accommodation and financial relief being provided wherever necessary, and the Directors were impressed with the large numbers who responded to the Nation's call and volunteered for service in 1914 and 1915.

The number of Employees with the Company in August 1914 was 7,866 and the Directors record with pride and satisfaction that altogether 2,264 men took part in the active defence of their Country. Of these 289 were killed in action or died of wounds, and to the parents, widows, and relatives, the Directors desire to express their profound sympathy.

A copy of this book is being supplied to all who were on service, and also to the representatives of those who were killed. It is hoped that it may be looked upon as a remembrance of their having taken part in the greatest struggle for freedom and liberty in the history of theworld, and that it will be handed down to posterity as a record of good service rendered to the Nation.
