From Main Body of Report - At Gateside Colliery, Lanark, on the 7th February, a miner was killed. The loose end of a long-wall face had holed through into an old rising heading the previous working shift. The deceased man, before actually commencing work on the morning of the second day following, went through into the heading with his naked light and ignited gas. He died three days later from burning injuries received. The fireman said he had inspected the heading 1 1/2 hours before the accident and found it clear of gas. The barometer was exceptionally low. The old heading was not fenced off from the working place, but, in any case, the man had no call to go where he did.

1923February27 5.30am, 8th hourBlairmuckhill LanarkA. & G. AndersonMosesSinnett34 Machineman Explosions of firedamp – Described on page 16
From Main Body of Report - At Blairmuckhill Colliery, Lanark, on 27th February, in a part of the mine worked with safety lamps alone, while two machinemen were driving an electrical coal cutting machine an explosion occured. The fireman, who was in the end road of the district three branch lengths away and the machinemen were burned. Gas, it was afterwards found, had been lying between the machineman and the fireman, and the fireman had lost his light, had opened his safety lamp, and was trying to relight it when the explosion occurred. The fireman and one of the machinemen made their way out to the shaft by the aid of electric cap lamps which they wore, but the second machineman, owing to thick smoke and after-damp, and to the cable of his cap lamp becoming caught about a prop and causing the loss of his light, missed his way, and instead of creeping out a road got into the waste between two roads and died from carbon monoxide poisoning.  The direct cause of the accident was the act of the fireman in striking a match, but the stoppage of an auxiliary fan which ventilated the district was an important contributory cause though, if the mine had been properly ventilated there should have been no need even for the fan. Several serious contraventions were found, and the manager, under-manager and fireman were prosecuted later on.

1923July 1610pm, 7th hourBlantyreferme Lanark A.G. Moore & Co., Ltd RobertMillar 52 Shaftsman Falls in Mines – Falls of Sides – The lower portion of a shaft used only for air and for accommodating pipes had become damaged and repairs were necessary. A defective steam joint made continuous work impossible.  Deceased and another made the damaged part of shaft, as they thought, temporarily safe by removing loose material. They descended 180ft and repaired the joint. Whilst ascending and when about 20 ft. above the joint a piece of stone fell down the shaft and struck Millar on the head. He died the following day. A flat wooden head cover fixed by glands on to the winding rope was broken. There seems little doubt the stone fell from the damaged portion of the shaft, a distance of about 150ft. The top portion of the shaft was used for coal winding operations, and admission to the lower portion was temporarily by means of a wooden “kettle” under the cage.
