Newspaper report - Dykehead 1916 page At Dykehead Colliery, owned by Messrs. The Summerlee Iron Co., Ltd., on 24th April, a miner and two youths were killed in a stooping place in the Ell Coal Seam. The lift of coal had nearly all been taken out when the roof collapsed. The seam was 7 feet thick and the roof was supported on props and straps; of the former, 100 are said to have been set in the lift at distances of about 18 inches apart. The stooping of this seam has been carried out for many years on the same system, but I am strongly of opinion that chocks or wooden pillars should in all such workings be freely used in addition to props. 1916 | April | 26 | Neilsland Colliery | Robert | Robertson |
Newspaper report - Neilsland 1916 page Five men were killed in one accident at Neilsland Colliery, owned by Messrs. John Watson Ltd., by an irruption of water and liquid matter. It was intended to work that part of the Ell Coal Seam left when the working of Eddlewood Colliery was abandoned, to the Neilsland shafts. By mines and a blind pit the Ell Coal had been reached near the vicinity of the No. 3 Eddlewood shaft. Boreholes were kept in advance but on 26th April the refuse with which the No. 3 Eddlewood shaft had been filled, being sludge from a coal washer and in a more or less liquid state, burst into the Ell Coal workings and blocked all the roads in the immediate area. Four of the men killed were in the Ell Coal, and the fifth was at or near the top of a brae in the Main Coal. The four men in the Ell Coal had no chance of escape, and the fifth man was overwhelmed by the flowing mud and carried down to the foot of the brae. It is possible that debris from a coal washer might, with an absolutely dry shaft and an outlet for water at the bottom, to drain away the water carried by the debris itself, be a safe medium with which to fill a shaft even if such shaft were to be at some later date holed into near the bottom but as such conditions are very rarely, if ever, met with, it would seem that if it is intended to hole into an old shaft so filled, the shaft should first be emptied of the debris by working from the surface. It is probable in this case that the barring of the old shaft had collapsed and that the inrush was due to a failure of the roof above the Ell Coal Seam. [Mine Inspectors Report 1916] |

Newspaper report - Ballingry pages At Lochore Colliery, owned by Messrs. The Fife Coal Co., Ltd., on 3rd May, a repairer and a brusher were killed. They had to take out a bar and put a new one in its place. They had carried out the first part of the work and were apparently engaged on the second when the fall occurred. No one saw the accident and therefore it cannot be stated positively that temporary props had not been set beneath the bars on either side of the one taken out. The changing of bars is usually dangerous, and it cannot be too strongly urged upon men who are sent to do such work that temporary supports -must be set until the new bar is in its place and properly lagged. Newspaper report - Lothians pages On 15th June, at Philpstoun No. 1 Shale Mine, owned by Messrs. James Ross and Co., two boys, aged 15 and 17, were killed by a fall of roof. The one boy had gone outbye for a wedge for his father, with whom he worked, and was joined by the other boy, who attended to a haulage motor. Together they went to the face, and after the one boy had handed the wedge to his father, the two were sitting some 5 yards back when the roof above them, which was supported on old railway rails, weighted, and breaking two rails fell upon them. After the accident it was seen that the boundaries of the roof which fell were formed by keen and glassy lypes. The use of old rails as bars was discontinued. [Mine Inspectors Report 1916] |

The tubing appears to have become charged from the switchbox, which must have been in contact with an incoming lead. The hole admitting the leads was not bushed and had sharp edges, and the box itself was not properly connected to earth. Proceedings were subsequently taken against the manager and electrician, both pled guilty and were fined. Three phase system, 440 volts. Neutral point earthed. [Mine Inspectors Report 1916] |
