Whiterigg - Extract from Truck Report 1871

From the evidence of two miners employed at Whiterigg it would appear that there is a store, and if the men do not deal there they will not get cash. "They always gave you the cash," one of them told us, "to take to the store, and the storeman marked down in your book what you purchased. When you bring the book again the clerk looks to see what you have left in the store, and if you have not left what pleases him, he throws it out to you."
