Old Monkland Parish

Coal mining has been carried on in this parish from early times.

The census population of the parish, including the Burgh of Coatbridge is as follows:

Table 1 shows that the parish contains 18 collieries in which 4,035 person are employed

The total number of houses in the parish, excluding the Burgh of Coatbridge, is 3331, while the number occupied by miners is 1437, that is 43.14% of the total. Of these houses, 423 have been provided by mine owners, 1008 are rented by miners and 6 are owned by miners.

  • Action has been taken with regard to the defective and foul condition of the conveniences at the above and also the condition of the outside sinks and drainage arrangements, but improvements have been of an intermittent nature.
